Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed chiefly of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), either derived from the shells of marine organisms or precipitated from solution, mostly in the ocean. Most limestones are porous and require adequate treatment. Limestone tiles have to be used appropriately according to their density and strength. Limestone is formed in layers - called bedding planes. These bedding planes contain vertical cracks called joints. Joints and bedding planes make the rock permeable. Limestone tiles are normally light in colour, however with impurities such as iron oxides and organic materials they can take on a variety of colours and surface markings. Limestone flooring has been used for many generations and is becoming an extremely popular flooring material offering timeless qualities.
Natural limestone flooring is rapidly becoming a popular choice with architects and interior designers looking to create a striking and modern design feature, combined with durability and ease of maintenance. It is increasingly specified throughout interior and exterior flooring projects.

Is it suitable for underfloor heating?
Any Natural Stone flooring is the most thermally conductive of all floor coverings so are specifically very suited to the big trend towards underfloor heating systems, the energy from the heating system quickly warms up the surface of the stone. This is especially good with either water or electric underfloor heating systems.
Where should it be fitted ?
You must consider the application when selecting a stone to ensure its suitability. Choosing the correct material is always a balance between aesthetics and practicality. For example, you could use a particular Limestone tile on a Bathroom floor but would it be suitable for a busy family kitchen.
What’s the difference in cost between products ?
There are many cheap Lime stones on the market, available on the internet, these are really sand stone, so some care is required when choosing a suppler, therefore carefully check the technical specification, paying particular attention to the porosity, and ensure that it is suitable for the intended application. We would be very happy to advise you, so please call us to discuss your requirements.(0121 745 7888)
How hard is limestone ?
We only offer the hardest variances of Limestone as these offer much better maintenance properties and have considerable advantages over Travertines, as they do not have the typical surface holes and fissures that need to be filled and can break down in time.
What sort of colour variation could I expect?
Many Limestone tiles vary naturally, this is quite normal and in many cases desirable, but you should always insist that if possible your order is supplied from a single batch and be wary of making a decision based on a single sample tile, particularly if a larger area is involved. A quarry is constantly moving forward so the sample you obtain may not accurately represent the batch you finally obtain.
What type of surface finishes can I have?
The are many different type to chose from it will mainly depend on the supplier and the type of stone. Some care is required here, The types of surface finish you chose will to a extent be based on the look you are trying to achieve modern, classic, contemporary or rustic look
These are just many differing finishes available,
Honed
Barrelled
Riven
Polished
You can have the edges in natural finish, buffed/ riven, polished, squared or chiselled.
How should they be installed ? and what size should I chose ?
It was at one point quite popular to install the limestone in different sizes within the same pattern repeating or laying in a totally random or none random pattern, this is would generally be called ‘the opus pattern’. However not so popular as the larger same size now days. These patterns are far more modern looking and contemporary. Its important to remember a product too large in size can give long term problems, with movement causing propagation of the fissures. Its best not to go above 610cm x610cm, we supply slate well above this size, but these are very thick, up to 20mm thick to stop issues occurring long term. Of all stone floor coverings, Limestone requires the most care during installation. A flexible adhesive must be used, one that is of the highest quality you can find is to be preferred, especially over underfloor heating.

How do I install it ?
Its always preferable to use a specialist, its unlikely a normal ceramic tiller or floor fitter will not have sufficient knowledge to do a job that will last a long enough time. While its quite possible he could make it look just as good, our experience tells us it does not last, therefore should be done by someone who knows what they are doing. When installing on a screeded floor a de-coupling membrane must be used to prevent contraction cracks in the screed being transmitted to the limestone flooring. To avoid this the suppliers / manufacturer’s instructions should always be followed. It should never be installed before 28 days after the screed has been laid, and the screed should be bonded and sealed using an epoxy based concrete primer, prior to starting. The finishing is very important. The grout should be a flexible product, in accordance with the suppliers’ instructions. Its normal to seal it a number of days after finishing as its vitally important moisture does not get sealed in. Finally there are many different types of seal available, but following the suppliers’ instructions is the best way. We always advise our customers what product to use. We have a lot of experience in this, we use different products for different applications, found to be suitable over many years of service.
